Privacy
The Short Version
The site sets no cookies, shows no ads and doesn’t ask you to log in. It counts page views without identifying anyone. If you subscribe to The Pour, your email address goes to the newsletter service that sends it.
Counting Visits
Page views are counted with GoatCounter. It uses no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. It records the page you loaded, the page that sent you, your browser and operating system, your screen width, your language, and a country worked out from your IP address. It doesn’t store the IP address. GoatCounter describes this itself in its privacy policy.
What Stays in Your Browser
The site keeps two kinds of things in your browser’s local storage, and neither is sent anywhere: your light or dark setting, if you change it, and the last prices, scores and figures a page fetched, so they appear at once on your next visit. Clearing the site’s data in your browser removes them.
The Newsletter
The Pour is sent through Buttondown. The sign-up form sends your email address straight to Buttondown, which stores it and delivers the newsletter. Every issue has an unsubscribe link. What Buttondown does with the address is in its privacy policy.
Who Else Sees a Request
The site is served by Cloudflare, which handles every request and, like any host, sees your IP address and your browser.
Most live data (prices, headlines, gas prices) is fetched by the site’s own server, so those providers see the server and not you. Your browser fetches a few things directly: map tiles and terrain on the map pages, team logos and scores on Sports, Treasury yields on Markets, and images in some archived notes that live on other publishers’ sites. Each of those hosts sees your IP address and browser when the page loads them.
One thing is held back until you ask for it. The live flight map on Track the Troops is another site’s page in a frame, and it brings that site’s ads and trackers with it. It doesn’t load unless you press the button.
What the Site Doesn’t Do
It doesn’t sell or share information about readers. It doesn’t collect any worth selling.
